The Gossip Issue
Gossip has always been more than talking about the person who has just left the room – it is the original social network. We ask: when perception trumps reality, what are the ethics of gossip?
Long-form features include an essay by the academic Clare Birchall on how gossip ties groups together; an interview with the award-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald on breaking the Snowden story and the psychological consequences of government spying; a piece by the writer Atossa Araxia Abrahamian on office gossip, the US election and alternative facts; the writer Geoff Shullenberger considers the novel in the internet age and how the intricacies of literary gossip have been subsequently destabilised; the writer Hannah Black discusses how gossip has always been a secret language of friendship and resistance between women; the veteran crime writer Duncan Campbell unpicks the realities and bizarre fantasies hidden in crime fiction; and we review Pankaj Mishra’s new book Age of Anger.
Fashion editorials include the cover story, a dynamic and feminist interpretation of Dior’s new vision and collection by the Turner prize-winning video artist Laure Prouvost. Elsewhere, the artist Sarah Dobai depicts the new and insurgent baroque of Gucci that continues to build under the creative direction of Alessandro Michele; and a casual approach to formal menswear is captured in an estate agent-themed editorial photographed by Olgaç Bozalp. Other contributing photographers are Joanna Piotrowska, Estelle Hanania, June Canedo, Joanna McClure, Joyce Ng, Sofie Middernacht and Maarten Alexander.
Tank Talks include conversations with the video artist Omer Fast, the author Emily Witt and the film director Kelly Reichardt.
